Big Players To Spy On IPv6-Enabled Users

"Leading Web content providers -- including Google, Yahoo, Netflix and Microsoft -- are conducting early-stage conversations about creating a shared list of customers who can access their Web sites via IPv6, the long-anticipated upgrade to the Internet's main communications protocol.

"The DNS Whitelist for IPv6 would be a list of IP addresses that have functioning IPv6 connectivity. Content providers would use this shared DNS Whitelist to serve up content to these IP addresses via IPv6 rather than through IPv4, which is the current version of the Internet Protocol. Web site visitors not listed on the DNS Whitelist for IPv6 would receive IPv4-based content...

"Content providers say they need a DNS Whitelist for IPv6 because the Internet has so many broken IPv6 links due to problematic default behavior and incompatibilities in operating systems, home gateways and customer premises equipment. Without a whitelist to help sort out which customers can and cannot receive IPv6 content, Web developers say they will inadvertently block too many customers from accessing their content."

Anonymous Bloggers At Risk

"The Internet has become a great soapbox for ordinary citizens, but there is increasing controversy around the trend of anonymous political blogging. In 2006, it was estimated that 55 percent of American bloggers post under a pseudonym. But along with the explosion of anonymous blogs has come a whole host of problems. Some bloggers have used their anonymity to spread false information without ramifications. Others have used it to launch personal attacks against friend and foe alike.

"This has led to appeals from all over the political spectrum for regulation. Some blogging platform providers such as Tumblr are taking action on their own and shutting down anonymous blogs. The European Union entertained a proposal last fall to prohibit anonymous blogs. In the U.S., some have asked that the FCC categorize anonymous political blogs under campaign finance laws subject to regulation...

Microsoft Jumps On "Evil Unemployed IT Worker" Bandwagon

"The world's biggest software maker has warned companies to expect an increase in `insider` security attacks by disgruntled, laid-off workers.

"Microsoft said so-called `malicious insider` breaches are on the rise and will worsen in the present downturn.

"`With 1.5 million predicted job losses in the US alone, there's an increased risk and exposure to these attacks,` said Microsoft's Doug Leland.

"`This is one of the most significant threats companies face,` he said."

FBI's Human Firewall: All FUD, No LULZ

"He's known as the `human firewall.`

"Massapequa native Shawn Henry is the head of investigating computer crimes for the FBI, and after he was introduced with that informal title, he talked Tuesday of the breadth of the computer-crime problem facing the country and the world at a conference in New York of many of the world's computer experts.

"Computer crime is `the most critical threat to our way of life other than weapons of mass destruction,` Henry, 46, a graduate of Hofstra University, said at the International Conference on Cyber Security, sponsored by the FBI and Fordham University."
